Instructor
Earnest L. Hudson, Jr., Adjunct Lecturer at York College at CUNY within the Dept. of Teachers Education, will be instructing the course and sharing from his vast experience as a Special Needs Master Personal Trainer.
For those of you who have attended my classes and have told me that I should teach at the collegiate level, I want you to know that I took those words seriously! After some hustling and putting a plan together, I finally managed to be hired as an Adjunct Lecturer at York College, CUNY. I will be in the Department of Teacher Education, working with students finishing up their teaching credential. The particular course that I am teaching for that department is Curriculum & Methods in Health and Physical Education for the Elementary School. Here's the course description:
Course Description - EDUC 318
Methods and materials appropriate to plan and implement lessons and units in health and physical education for the elementary school teacher. Classroom management and safety, assessment and evaluation, integration of children with special needs. Learn to teach basic rhythmic and motor activities, sport skills, and health-related fitness concepts. Selection of culturally sensitive and functionally appropriate media and technology.
What this basically means is that I will be teaching K-6 grade teachers how to integrate Health and Physical Education principles into their lesson plans. This class will be largely lecture and workshop based. I do not believe that I posess the words to convey my excitement at being able to bring fitness to the collegiate environment, particularly as I perceive it as a fitness professional, rather than as a strict academic.
There is also the possibility of teaching a program design course within the Physical Education Department for Special Populations. As many of you know, I am pretty much considered to be Special Needs as far as personal training goes. In fact, thats probably the only type of training that I've done for many years now. It's pretty common knowledge that I work with Detective Eric Grimes, the NYC police officer who experienced an unfortunate accident that resulted in a below the knee amputation of his left leg.
You probably also know that we've worked together to get his kettlebell game up bigtime- he's doing 6 minute sets, 20 lifts per minute, 3 minutes per hand, all with the 16kg.
If that's not enough, he's stepped his game up and has begun to visit some of NYC's local Bar conditioning groups. On occsion, he's even hung out with some of the Highlanders, a Brooklyn based Bar group. Here's a youtube vid of the group hanging out and doing their thing:
Eric has gotton to the point of being able to do a handstand press with a static hold- NICE!! I'm hoping to bring all those training paradigms that were used with Eric and my other clientele and really give these college students something to think about!
Once again, I thank you all for your support! Without it, I couldn't make a living doing what I enjoy doing- helping people to safely and effectively reach their fitness goals. Through such support and affirmation, I have been able to continually challenge myself, and thus, I find myself moving into this new chapter of fitness as an educator and professional. A friend of mine cautioned me by saying "It's going to be challenging! People simply do not like to think anymore." My reply? That's the whole point of education, in the true Latin sense of the word- Educe: To draw out. During my years of teaching, I realize that, as evidenced by my experience, the learning environment is MOST conducive to learning when I take on the role of an educator in it's Latin sense. My job is to draw out all that good "stuff" within the student tht motivates them to a cognizance of themselves, their goals and actions. For myself, that's the fun part- challenging and preparing myself to meet that task as honestly as I can. Logic stipulates that someone who doesn't have immediate life experience of a thing cannot possibly appreciate the importance of WHY they need to become familiar with a particular concept of principle, BUT a good educator provides the context and the drive that lights the fire within the student, to make them WANT to learn WHY they need to become familiar with the concept or principle to which they are being introduced.
YES! I am indeed excited about this new opportunity...and it makes me think...if I take all this stuff seriously, why not go on to get the Ph.D.? You already know that I want to do it, it's just a matter of finding the right program at the right time...
LET'S STEP THIS FITNESS GAME UP A NOTCH!
I thank you all sincerely for your support over the years!
The AFAA PFTv4 instructor schedule is posted up for Earnest Hudson through Novemeber 2011. Take a look at the dates and book well in advance to sit in one his courses. Here's a typical testimonial from one of his class participants:
Earnest, I wanted to touch base to thank you for your awesome personal training course earlier this month. I found your training style very educational and informative. I definitely was able to master the understanding of the planes we exercise in... I know that I gained a vast amount of knowledge, I just hope I applied it well enough.
Thanks again! And I hope to see you again, perhaps at another cert course! Or conference.
I'm "gambling" that the class participants are "odds on favorites" to do well and pass this exam! Make sure that YOU'RE there to "lay your cards on the table" and see what you got!
Here is a great example of how to apply the science of fitness conditioning to marketing paradigms. PLEASE understand, I am not knocking this product nor its creator, BUT, I do want to highlight that while this appears to be something new to the industry MODALITY wise, it's still the same science that has always been there. Why is that? Because the nature of Human Movement Science (HMS) is fundamentally consistant.
For those who study HMS, they will recognize the Swing Set Fitness program to be another variation on stability conditioning in an unstable environment. Generally speaking, anythinig else to say about the program would be a variation on that theme. By comparison, think TRX or similiar modalities- while each offers its own unique features due to the inherent nature of the modality, they all collectively offer stability conditioning in an unstable environment- AND THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!
Once again we are back at XSport Fitness to get 'em certified. You know, we've been there so much lately, it kinda feels like home!...C'mon down and check out the new place...haha!

As always, study BEFORE the class to get the most out of the class!
Yet again, someone has introduced me to another incredible form of human movement. This is a new sport that's not new at all. It's credited as being descended from martial art freestyle competitors who mixed in heavy dosages of gymnastics, parkour, and B-Boying. I find it incredible what the human body is capable of in the hands of someone without fear!
This is a true example of human craftsmanship. When I see individuals commanding the use of their bodies in such a manner, I get inspired, motivated, hyped, amped, and any other adjective that you can articulate. THIS is what I aspire to do (and more) with my physicality!!!

Recently, we presented a video of a gentleman named Hannibal, who does some incredible things on a pull up bar. In that tradition, we now present to you some equally talented and physically gifted men from India using a vertical bar. What they do is no less incredible....
I felt compelled to post this video as this guy has an excellent command of his physicality. One of the things that we promote at Anatomatrix Fitness is human performance- it's great to look good, but can you use it for something?! This guy has both! Excellent work...now I have something else to aspire to!
We're staying local this week, but we're still putting in the work! The Anatomatrix plan: educate 'em and give 'em the opportunity to prove themselves. How? By letting them take and pass a third party accredited exam, that's how!...Come on down!
The next installment of the Fitness Professional Series is out!! This was a great interview and a lot of fun to do. Roderick and Lisa Priestly are two very down to earth fitness professionals with a lot to say...I suppose that I am extremely fortunate that I have the opportunity to come make contact with so many people who are entreprenueral, intelligent, and inspiring. It is very cool to sit down and speak with people who care, and who are passionate about what they do.
Next Installment: David Ganulin of Kettlebell Concepts. Hear what he has to say about the fitness industry and Kettlebell education- it just might surprise you!!

People always ask if the Level 1 Kettlebell Instructor Training Class is really worth taking and if it will be impactful. Well...this is where the rubber meets the road, or maybe...the bell starts to swing! Form the proverbial Horse's mouth, class participants tell it like it is...
I've taught at a lot of fitness facilities and clubs during my sojourn as a CEU/CEC presenter, but never have I been as well received as I was this weekend while facilitating the Kettlebell Concept's Level 1 Instructor Training Workshop at Club Fit in Jeferson Valley, NY. While the staff was friendly and helpful, what most impressed me was the pride that each team member seemed to exhibit about the club itself. They all appeared proud, and never hesitated to move as an organized unit the entire weekend. Whether I needed assistance in setting up kettlebells, a member needed information, or a fellow class participant needed to learn the local food spots in the area, the Club Fit team responded immediately, and it was a sheer pleasure to be in their company.
As a presenter, I look forward to future venues that are this satisfying and rewarding, and while I can honestly say that I've never had an un-enjoyable experience presenting, not all of them are nourishing. When I do experience the nourishing ones, I am acutely reminded of the pleasure that I receive when sharing information, fitness information, to people who respect, honor, and value it as essential to the improvement of Quality of Life.
